By • Olalekan Fagbade BREAKING: 60 Boko Haram, ISWAP Militants killed in renewed clashes No fewer than 60 members of the dreaded Boko Haram terrorist group, and several fighters of the Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP) have been reportedly killed during a clash in Borno State. A counter-insurgency expert and security analyst in Lake Chad, Zagazola Makama, disclosed this in a post on his social media platform X on Saturday. He said that a heavy fight broke out between the two groups at Tumbum Ali Island in Marte LGA at about 1400hours, with the commanders of the warring groups killed. He stated that the attack was in retaliation of the massive killing of ISWAP fighters by the Buduma factions that had seized most of their hideouts. He wrote, “Scores of fighters from the Jam’at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da’wah wa’l-Jihd, Boko Haram, and the Islamic State of West African Province, ISWAP, terrorists, including their commanders were killed during an infighting in the North East of Borno State. “Reports indicated that a heavy fight broke out between the two groups at Tumbum Ali Island in Marte LGA at about 1400hours. “Intelligence sources told Zagazola Makama, a Counter-Insurgency Expert and Security Analyst in the Lake Chad region that 6 boats belonging to the Bakura Buduma faction and four JAS elements boats, all full with fighters were destroyed. “The sources said the casualties on both sides could be more than 60 as the infighting continued.”

ISWAP reportedly invites Boko Haram for gunfight in Sambisa forest

A counter-insurgency expert and security analyst in Lake Chad, Zagazola Makama says he has received an exclusive letter written by ISWAP group to the Boko Haram faction of Abubakar Shekau, challenging them to a fight. Zagazola claimed ISWAP accused the Boko Haram group of misleading the people, spreading falsehood, withholding the truths, corruption and raping of women in the name of worshipping God. His statement was contained in a post on his social media platform on Friday in which he stated that the Boko Haram faction had already accepted the challenge. According to him, the battle took place in Gaizuwa, with many killed on both sides. Recall that the security expert had posted a different statement on Wednesday claiming that Boko Haram fighters captured 60 terrorists of the Islamic State in West Africa Province, ISWAP, including three key commanders of the sect. Zagozola said that the ISWAP terrorists were captured on their way to Damasak in Borno State, identifying the commanders as Abubakar Saddiq, Abou Maimuna and Malam Idris. However, Zagazola said “both groups are warming up for the next battle although the time and venue remain unannounced.” He wrote, “EXCLUSIVE: ISWAP Invited Boko Haram to a gunfight in Sambisa forest. “Zagazola has received an exclusive later written by ISWAP group to the Boko Haram faction of Abubakar SHEKAU, challenging them to a FIGHT. “In the letter addressed to Boko Haram, the ISWAP said: ‘We warned you about what you are doing; from killing, destroying people’s properties, and abusing the courses of our Jihad. “They also accused the Boko Haram group of misleading the people, spreading falsehood, withholding the truths, corruption and raping of women in the name of worshipping God. “Beware, beware, get ready, we will follow you for leading our people astray. The Director, Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, made this known on Thursday in Abuja while giving update on military operations across the country in the last one week. Showing the battle damage assessment pictures of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) air interdictions, he said the operations also decimated many insurgents in other parts of the country. Buba said the military in a surgical operation targeted at the residence of an ISWAP terrorist commander in Niger, made several arrests and discoveries. He said that other operations conducted in the last one week by troops in various theatres, neutralised 73 terrorists and led to the arrest of 182 others. According to him, the troops also arrested 14 suspected oil thieves, and rescued 68 hostages in the South South, as well as denied oil thieves an estimated N1.212 billion from the illicit business. “Furthermore, troops recovered 119 assorted weapons and 1,537 assorted ammunition. “The breakdown as follows: one GPMG, three PKT guns, 39 AK47 rifles, five locally fabricated rifles, one locally made double barrel gun, one Barretta pistol, four locally made pistols, five RPG bombs and five pump action guns. Also recovered were one short gun, one hand grenade, two dane guns, one AK47 rifle loaded with 14 rounds of 7.62mm special, and one locally made pistol loaded with live cartridges. “Others are 586 rounds of 7.62mm special ammo, a bag containing 287 rounds of 7.62mm special ammo, 389 rounds of 7.62mm NATO, 141 rounds of 7.62mm special (belted) ammo, 12 rounds of 9mm ammo. ”Also, 113 rounds of live cartridges, 25 empty magazine, 13 vehicles, 3 motorcycles, 10 mobile phones, 2 HH radio, one boafeng radio and the sum of N3.3 million amongst other items,” he said. In the North East, Buba said the troops of Operation HADIN KAI neutralised 39 Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists, arrested 22, rescued 18 hostages and recovered large cache of arms. In the North Central, the troops of Operations Safe Haven and Whirl Stroke neutralised 12 terrorists, arrested 109, rescued 22 kidnapped hostages and recovered several arms and ammunition, he added. In North West, Buba said the troops of Operation Hadarin Daji neutralised 10 terrorists, arrested 11, and rescued 11 hostages, while the troops of Operation Whirl Punch neutralised three terrorists, arrested 38, and rescued 12 hostages. He also gave update on the operation in the Niger Delta, where troops of Operation Delta Safe, destroyed 63 illegal refining sites and recovered stolen products. “Troops discovered and destroyed 15 dugout pits, 45 boats, 87 storage tanks, 13 vehicles, 127 cooking ovens, one pumping machine, four outboard engine and 63 illegal refining sites. “Troops recovered 962,500 litres of stolen crude oil; 35,420 litres of illegally refined AGO and 38,450 litres of DPK. “Troops also neutralised one criminal, apprehended 14 suspected oil thieves and recovered one locally made double barrel, one Barretta pistol loaded with cartridges, one locally made pistol, five rounds of 9mm ammo, three live cartridges and two mobile amongst others,” he said. In the South East, Buba said the troops of operation UDO KA neutralised three terrorists, arrested nine suspected criminals and rescued three hostages. “Troops recovered four locally made pistols, 48 rounds of 7.62mm NATO, six rounds of 7.62mm special ammo, one motorcycle, one HH radio and the sum of N22,100 among others. “All recovered items, arrested suspects and rescued hostages were handed over to the relevant authority for further action,” the defence spokesman said. Boko Haram bomb maker, ‘Awana Gaidam’ killed by own IED in Sambisa Forest

The chief bomb maker and a high-ranking member of the Boko Haram Terrorist Group, Awana Gaidam has been killed by his own Improvised Explosive Device(IED). The 39-year-old bomb maker, apart from his high status in the command structure of the Boko Haram terrorists, was one of their capable hands involved in making Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). Awana was believed to be responsible for plotting many IEDs attacks troops of Operation Hadin Kai during fighting patrols, along major highways between Maiduguri to Damboa, Bama to Pulka and Bita as well as Banki to Darajamal general area. Intelligence Sources disclosed that the bomb struck his vehicle along Njumia and Arra in the Sambisa forest general area on March 27, killing him instantly. The sources disclosed that Awana had planted bombs in strategic positions to fortify his camp within the Sambisa forest but little did he know that his evil plot to kill soldiers and derail military operations in the general area, would only come back to claim his life as the explosive device and shattered his body into several pieces. For some perspective on the immense proportions of this development, since 2022, Boko Haram and ISWAP have carried out more than 90 attacks in the North East using IEDs. The insurgents resorted to the use of IEDs as a result of the increased and sustained pressure of the Joint Task Force Operation Hadin Kai with support of the combined troops of the Multination Joint Task Force (MNJTF), Niger, Cameroon and Chad in the Lake Chad sub-region. The killing of Awana, therefore represents a serious blow to the operational capability of the Terrorists. The death of Awana could can best be described as a major breakthrough in the Nigerian military’s Counter Terrorism Operation in the North East.
